Bugs -A Summer Problem

Bugs

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning are not in the Pest Control business. We however thought that sharing a few ideas to help reduce your bug fight this Summer may be helpful to our customers and potential future customers.

The Summer heat and warm weather are attractive to pests.  However, you can make known to these uninvited quests a reason to stay away from your home by following these tips and more.

  • Try to keep tree branches and plants away from touching your home. These are easy ways pests can get into your home.
  • Keep attics, basements, and crawlspaces as dry as possible as well as ventilated to avoid moisture which attracts bugs.
  • Don’t leave vegetables and fruits out on your kitchen cabinets for a lengthy time as well as keep your kitchen as clean as possible of crumbs.
  • Be sure you have weather stripping on your doors to avoid gaps that will allow bugs to get in.
  • Storing your trash properly in your outdoor trash cans in airtight trash bags if possible.
  • Avoid any standing water in your yard that can attract insects, especially mosquitoes and gnats.
  • Encourage natural predators such as birds and even, though this may be hesitant, bats. These both can help control a potential bug problem.
  • Adding screens to windows can also help keep them out.
  • Repairing cracks and sealing openings around your pipes can help as well.
  • Keeping the perimeter of your home and foundation uncluttered can help as well. This can help avoid infestations.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning hope that this information was helpful in your quest to keep your home and yard bug free during these summer months.

Stay Cool in the Heat this Summer

Summer Heat

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning know that we are all facing another hot summer this year in South Alabama. We would like to give you a few tips that can help you deal with the summer heat.

  • Drink Plenty of Water– Staying hydrated is important to your overall health regardless of what time of the year we are in. The Mayo Clinic recommends a minimum of 92 ounces for women and 124 for men. Adding flavors to it such as lemon or lime may help make it easier to achieve your daily water intake goal.
  • Stay away from direct exposure in the hottest time of the day– Mid afternoon from around 3 pm and 6 pm is normally the hottest part of the day during the Summer.
  • Wear cotton and loose clothing– Cotton is soft and lightweight. It is breathable which allows heat to escape from the body. It also soaks up sweat.
  • Ventilate and cool your indoor living space– Ensure that your air conditioning system is ready to deal with the hot summer days. Also making sure that your home is well ventilated is also important. Ceiling fans are a good way to help with ventilation.
  • Never exercise outdoors in the hottest part of the day– Exercise is important but working out outdoors in the hottest part of the day makes it difficult for your body to stay cool.
  • Wear Sun Block– When unprotected skin is exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, skin cells typically see a drop in levels of nitric oxide. Reduced nitric oxide results in a reduction in blood flow to the skin, which can throw your body temperature out of whack.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning hope this information will be helpful to you as you work to stay cool in our hot Summer months.

Please remember when you need a new HVAC system, or repairs to your current heating and cooling units, or a maintenance program we at Action Heating and Air Conditioning can help with an affordable solution to any of these situations.  Our technicians have been thoroughly trained to perform the needed services to ensure your HVAC system is ready for whatever winter we will have this year.

Spring Is Here, Are You Ready

air conditioning unit

Spring is here and it is time to get your Central Air Conditioning System ready for the long Summer ahead of us here in South Alabama. If we have a heat wave anywhere similar to 2023, your Air Conditioning system will be working hard this year.

So here are some things you can do to ensure you are ready.

  • If you are going to check anything on your units yourself, be sure you turn off the circuit breaker first for your safety.
  • Check and change your return air filters.
  • Remove any debris or plants near your outside condensing unit.
  • Clean the air conditioner condenser coils.
  • Check the coolant lines.
  • And of course, test the unit out to see if it is cooling properly.

All of these things could be checked by a proficient Do-It-Yourselfer, but if you are like most of us several items on this list plus more should be checked out by an HVAC system professional.

It is a good practice to investigate the twice a year maintenance programs most Air Conditioning Contractors offer at a reasonable rate. By doing so you can avoid that last minute program with your unit when the heat arrives, and the reliable and dependable HVAC contractors are swapped with work and may not be able to get to you right away. In addition to this regular maintenance of your AC units can help avoid costly repairs.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning offer an affordable maintenance program to fit your needs and budget. Our technicians have been thoroughly trained to perform the needed services to ensure your HVAC system is ready for whatever winter we will have this year.

We have been serving the Mobile, Semmes, Theodore, Daphne, Fairhope, Silverhill, Foley, Robertsdale, Loxley, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and surrounding areas in South Alabama since 1997. Looking for a new Air Conditioning System

air conditioning

There are several things you need to take into consideration when you are looking for a new Air Conditioning System.

First of all, you need to be sure you have the right size to properly cool your home. The unit needs to run efficiently without creating a huge utility bill. You need to get quotes for a few contractors with their quote explaining what that size unit and brand.

You need to understand what the term SEER means. This term stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. If you want the quietest unit with the most features, you want an air conditioning unit with a higher SEER rating. The higher the SEER is the lower the operating cost will be but at the same time, the unit will cost more upfront plus a higher installation charge. So, it is important to get the most energy efficiency unit you can for the size of your home without overpaying for it.

Next let’s talk about the term “tonnage”. This term refers to the about of heat that can be removed from your home in one hour. For example, a one-ton unit will remove 12,000 BTUs of heat from your home in an hour. It is important to know that a unit that is too small will not efficiently cool your home and one to large will wear out faster because it will cycle off and on too often. It also will not effectively remove the humidity from your home. In both of these situations your energy bill will be too high.

There are several factors that will be important in determining the proper tonnage.

  1. The climate you live in
  2. The size of your home
  3. How much insulation you have
  4. How many windows are in your home
  5. How your house relates to the sun shining down on it.

You need to ensure that the technician takes all these factors into account when trying to efficiently determine the right tonnage for your home. He needs to go through every room in your home, your attic, basement, and crawlspace (if you have these) to evaluate the correct size unit.

Buying a new air conditioning system is important and expensive. So be sure to do your homework, ask questions, and get more than one option before buying a new unit. Window units and ductless units sometimes are a possible option, but in most cases a central unit is your best choice.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning sale and install affordable air conditioning and heating systems. Our technicians have been thoroughly trained to perform the needed services to ensure your HVAC system is right for your home and will be the most energy efficient.
