Winter in South Alabama 2024

Winter

The big question to all of us that live in South Alabama is what will be the Winter coming this 2024- 2025 cycle. If you recall last winter was not bad but we had a few days in the teens that drove up our utility bills.

Right now the Farmers Almanac is forecasting a mild Wet Winter here in our area. But as we know that could change as weather is so unpredictable.

Getting back to energy costs in the Winter, I am not sure you are aware that our energy consumption cost is actually higher in a cold Winter than in the blistering hot Summers we have here.

A big question is what will be your energy cost with the HVAC system you have in your home. There are 3 types of heating systems that you may have in your home and each one greatly affects your energy cost. Let’s look at each one now based on a cold winter as we had several days last year.

  • A Gas Furnace- If your home is heated with a gas furnace you have the most energy efficient method of heating your home in a cold winter. Gas is less expensive than electricity and a gas furnace will hit your home quickly therefore taking less energy to make your home comfortable.
  • A Heat Pump system- In a cold winter a heat pump system takes more energy to hopefully heat your home sufficiently. You will not feel the warmth you expected with a heat pump system if it really gets cold this winter. However, if we have a mild winter, a heat pump system is 3 times more effective than gas.
  • A Heat Strip system- This is by far the most energy expensive way to heat your home in the winter. You will receive the warmth you expected but your energy bills will be through the roof. It takes quite a bit of energy to supply the heat strips with what they need to heat your home.

When looking to replace your existing HVAC system, a system with heat strips is the cheapest system but far more costly when heating is needed. Most people nowadays in our area, since we normally have mild winters with few or no days with temperatures in the teens, will buy with a heat pump system.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning hope this information was helpful. We all hope for a mild Winter this year.

  • Be sure and turn off bath and kitchen exhaust fans within 20 to 25 minutes after you bath or cook something.

  • Make sure your warm air registers are not blocked by furniture or drapes.

Fall is Right Around the Corner

maintenance

Well, it is still very hot outside here in South Alabama. But you need to remember that Fall is just around the corner. With this said, Maintenance of your Heating and Cooling system is critical twice a year, in the Fall and Spring.

Here are some things you can do yourself, remembering that having a trained heating and cooling specialist checking your system is important.

Do It Yourself Maintenance

  • Test Your Thermostat. Check your thermostat to ensure it is set at the desired temperature and is functioning correctly.
  • Eliminate Debris around your Outside Unit. It is important to keep debris such as leaves and grass from being near your outside Condenser Unit. Keeping an open space around the outside unit is important. You should clean the fins on your outside unit and straighten any bent fins. If they are badly damaged, you will need a professional here.
  • Cleaning the evaporator coil. You can clean this yourself. This is located inside the inside air handler. You can use a soft brush to clean this coil gently.
  • Check and Changing Air Filters– It is a good practice to check your air filters monthly. Dirt filters will decrease the efficiency of your unit and increase your utility bills.
  • Check Your Evaporator Drain– This drain is responsible for removing condensation that can accumulate. You can make sure that it is clear of debris and is not clogged. If it is stopped up your pan could overflow and cause water damage to your home.

A trained heating and cooling expert with not only check the items above but will also check your refrigerant levels, electrical components, and the overall performance to ensure your system is working properly and efficiently.

Bugs -A Summer Problem

Bugs

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning are not in the Pest Control business. We however thought that sharing a few ideas to help reduce your bug fight this Summer may be helpful to our customers and potential future customers.

The Summer heat and warm weather are attractive to pests.  However, you can make known to these uninvited quests a reason to stay away from your home by following these tips and more.

  • Try to keep tree branches and plants away from touching your home. These are easy ways pests can get into your home.
  • Keep attics, basements, and crawlspaces as dry as possible as well as ventilated to avoid moisture which attracts bugs.
  • Don’t leave vegetables and fruits out on your kitchen cabinets for a lengthy time as well as keep your kitchen as clean as possible of crumbs.
  • Be sure you have weather stripping on your doors to avoid gaps that will allow bugs to get in.
  • Storing your trash properly in your outdoor trash cans in airtight trash bags if possible.
  • Avoid any standing water in your yard that can attract insects, especially mosquitoes and gnats.
  • Encourage natural predators such as birds and even, though this may be hesitant, bats. These both can help control a potential bug problem.
  • Adding screens to windows can also help keep them out.
  • Repairing cracks and sealing openings around your pipes can help as well.
  • Keeping the perimeter of your home and foundation uncluttered can help as well. This can help avoid infestations.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning hope that this information was helpful in your quest to keep your home and yard bug free during these summer months.

Stay Cool in the Heat this Summer

Summer Heat

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning know that we are all facing another hot summer this year in South Alabama. We would like to give you a few tips that can help you deal with the summer heat.

  • Drink Plenty of Water– Staying hydrated is important to your overall health regardless of what time of the year we are in. The Mayo Clinic recommends a minimum of 92 ounces for women and 124 for men. Adding flavors to it such as lemon or lime may help make it easier to achieve your daily water intake goal.
  • Stay away from direct exposure in the hottest time of the day– Mid afternoon from around 3 pm and 6 pm is normally the hottest part of the day during the Summer.
  • Wear cotton and loose clothing– Cotton is soft and lightweight. It is breathable which allows heat to escape from the body. It also soaks up sweat.
  • Ventilate and cool your indoor living space– Ensure that your air conditioning system is ready to deal with the hot summer days. Also making sure that your home is well ventilated is also important. Ceiling fans are a good way to help with ventilation.
  • Never exercise outdoors in the hottest part of the day– Exercise is important but working out outdoors in the hottest part of the day makes it difficult for your body to stay cool.
  • Wear Sun Block– When unprotected skin is exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, skin cells typically see a drop in levels of nitric oxide. Reduced nitric oxide results in a reduction in blood flow to the skin, which can throw your body temperature out of whack.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning hope this information will be helpful to you as you work to stay cool in our hot Summer months.
