Winter in South Alabama 2024

Winter

The big question to all of us that live in South Alabama is what will be the Winter coming this 2024- 2025 cycle. If you recall last winter was not bad but we had a few days in the teens that drove up our utility bills.

Right now the Farmers Almanac is forecasting a mild Wet Winter here in our area. But as we know that could change as weather is so unpredictable.

Getting back to energy costs in the Winter, I am not sure you are aware that our energy consumption cost is actually higher in a cold Winter than in the blistering hot Summers we have here.

A big question is what will be your energy cost with the HVAC system you have in your home. There are 3 types of heating systems that you may have in your home and each one greatly affects your energy cost. Let’s look at each one now based on a cold winter as we had several days last year.

  • A Gas Furnace- If your home is heated with a gas furnace you have the most energy efficient method of heating your home in a cold winter. Gas is less expensive than electricity and a gas furnace will hit your home quickly therefore taking less energy to make your home comfortable.
  • A Heat Pump system- In a cold winter a heat pump system takes more energy to hopefully heat your home sufficiently. You will not feel the warmth you expected with a heat pump system if it really gets cold this winter. However, if we have a mild winter, a heat pump system is 3 times more effective than gas.
  • A Heat Strip system- This is by far the most energy expensive way to heat your home in the winter. You will receive the warmth you expected but your energy bills will be through the roof. It takes quite a bit of energy to supply the heat strips with what they need to heat your home.

When looking to replace your existing HVAC system, a system with heat strips is the cheapest system but far more costly when heating is needed. Most people nowadays in our area, since we normally have mild winters with few or no days with temperatures in the teens, will buy with a heat pump system.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning hope this information was helpful. We all hope for a mild Winter this year.

Summer is Here. Has Your AC Maintenance Done?

maintenance

Summer is here. We already are having temperatures in the upper 80’s and low 90’s and we are not even to July 15th. So, are you prepared for another South Alabama blistering summer like we had last year? AC maintenance is important to ensure your HVAC system

Well, if you are, I sure hope you have made all the do-it-yourself checks on your air conditioning system. Like checking your air filters regularly and ensuring all the debris is removed around your outside air conditioning condenser.  But even if you have, are you sure you are ready?

Having your heating and cooling systems checked twice a year by a trained HVAC technician can only save you money in the long run.

First of all, regular AC maintenance can help your home stay safe if you go away for vacation. This can ensure your unit is working well while you are away as well as lower your chance of carbon monoxide poisoning and even catch issues that could result in a fire in your electrical system.

Secondly, regular AC maintenance helps extend the life of your HVAC system. This means that it will be a longer time before you will need to replace the unit.

And finally, your HVAC system is designed to help keep your home at a temperature you are comfortable with year-round. Regular maintenance allows your system to distribute air more evenly and efficiently. This means your home with stay comfortable in the hottest day this Summer and again in the coldest day this Winter.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning offer an affordable maintenance program for your entire HVAC system to fit your needs and budget. Our technicians have been thoroughly trained to perform the needed services to ensure your HVAC system is ready for whatever winter we will have this year.

We have been serving the Mobile, Semmes, Theodore, Daphne, Fairhope, Silverhill, Foley, Robertsdale, Loxley, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and surrounding areas in South Alabama since 1997. My Furnace- Shoud I Have It Checked?

My Furnace – Should I have it Checked?

Winter is right around the corner, so you may be wondering whether you should have your heating system checked out before you need it. One question that needs to be addressed is do you have a heat pump system or a furnace for heating.

If you have a furnace, here are some reasons why you should have it checked out yearly.

Safety

Even a minor crack in the furnace lines can be a safety hazard for you and your family. Faulty furnaces are one of the major causes of cardon monoxide poisoning.

Energy Efficient

If your furnace is not heating your entire home or area completely, it is not working properly which could cause higher than needed energy bills.

Warranty

Be sure and check your warranty information well, annual maintenance on your furnace may be a requirement to maintain your warranty. If you cannot locate your warranty paperwork, the company that installed the unit should be able to help.

Fire Hazards

Faulty furnaces or heating systems can cause a fire in your home. This is a huge reason to have it inspected yearly before use.

Longer Life

Most furnaces are good for 15 to 20 years, the better it is maintained the longer life you should receive from your furnace, as well as lower repair costs.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning hope this information was helpful for you as you prepare for the winter ahead whether it is mild like last year or severe like a few of years ago.

We have been serving the Mobile, Semmes, Theodore, Daphne, Fairhope, Silverhill, Foley, Robertsdale, Loxley, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and surrounding areas in South Alabama since 1997.
